CROHN'S DISEASE ENDOSCOPY VISUALIZER

The client requested an interactive tool that would allow users to visualize different combinations of Crohn's Disease diagnostic scores, across different intestinal segments. This required the production of 100+ images of varying disease states.

 

This presented an opportunity to utilize Houdini's procedural modelling and texturing capabilities. I built several parameters for disease features (e.g. ulcer size, ulcerated area, erythema, bleeding, etc.) that would enable the full range of disease states to be generated just by mixing and matching these parameter values.

 

The Dev team built an Azure rendering pipeline based on this Houdini file. I then worked closely with Dev and Medical Content to create rules, to ensure that the generated images are medically possible and accurate to the client's expectations.

SCORING EXAMPLES

The tool includes all combinations of SES-CD diagnostic scores that are medically possible, across 3 different intestinal segments. For each score, there is also a zoomed-in view on one ulcer, with a 7mm scale ruler and grid.

PARAMETRIC CONTROLS

There are several parameters that control the appearance of the intestinal segment. Below is a simplified demonstration used in a promotional video, and an under-the-hood look at the parameters that underlie the setup.

These parameters allow the generation of many images that produce life-like random variation while staying within the medically accurate range of features that define one
SES-CD score.
